Abstract: |
An archaeological desk based assessment was undertaken prior to the proposed construction of Stansted Airport Slip Roads. Although no known archaeological sites or finds existed within the area, this assessment identified a high potential for archaeology from the prehistoric and Roman periods, an uncertain potential for the early and late medieval periods and a low potential for the post-medieval periods. This was based on information from a variety of sources including recent archaeological investigations, mostly during the development at Stansted Airport. As most of the area lay on land which had been used to dump soil and material during the construction of the airport and the centre of the development site lay within an area of backfilled quarry only three small areas might contain archaeological remains. It had been recommended that in these areas trial trenching was undertaken prior to construction to assess whether any archaeological deposits existed in these areas. [Au] |
