Abstract:
Desk-based assessment of the proposed route of a replacement water main which ran along the bank and the bed of the River Lune identified that Neolithic artefacts, Bronze Age burials and a Bronze Age palstave had been found nearby, and that the centre of Roman occupation had been based around the site of the fort, just to the south of the proposal area. The medieval castle and priory had later been constructed on this site, which had been designated as a SAM. Findspots of Roman coins may have indicated areas of Roman occupation along the river bank. Fifteen fragments of stone cross shafts, probably of 9th and 10th century date, had been recovered within Lancaster, and may have indicated the presence of a monastic establishment. In the medieval period, at least two water-mills had lain within Lancaster. Only two recorded sites, the SAM of Skerton Bridge and the 18th century St. George's Quay, would be directly affected by the proposed pipeline route, although a high proportion of Listed Buildings lay along the wharf of the quay. The quay wall itself was Grade II Listed. It was concluded that much of the pipeline route ran through an area of Roman, medieval and post-medieval riverfront potential, with the possiblilty of remains relating to bridges, fords, quayside installations and a medieval water-mill being present.
