Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken across the Airport Gate site, which was situated on the northern side of Heathrow Airport, immediately to the north of the Bath Road. A total of nine trial trenches were opened to reveal natural gravels overlain by brickearth. A probable prehistoric ditch was traced for a length of 12m. It contained a fragment of burnt flint and a sherd of redeposited Roman pottery. This ditch was truncated by a gully which contained a fragment of medieval pottery. The gully was associated with two post holes, probably of similar date. A ditch containing charcoal and daub was also uncovered. Although no firm dating evidence was obtained from the ditch it was likely to have been of Roman or Saxon origin. Three Saxon pits were also identified, and a loomweight fragment recovered. The remaining features on the site comprised of undated tree root holes and a plough mark. [Au(abr)] |
