Abstract: |
Documentary research and trial trenching were undertaken at a former North West Water depot. Until the later 19th century the property had been part of a moated site known as the Alleys. This had contained a tower house and associated buildings and was probably the manorial centre for the manor of Salthill. There seems to have been a complex moat system, possibly having a double moat. This was filled in, and the buildings were demolished, probably at the same time, in the mid-17th century. Late medieval remains survived on the site and the conditions in the moat were good for the survival of organic materials. [Au(abr)] |
