Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during the construction of a new access route which fell within a site once occupied by a substantial moated manor house, a brick-built structure dating from the mid-16th century. It was possible that it had replaced an earlier, medieval building, although the site lay outside the area of the medieval town. The hall had been used for industrial purposes in the 19th century, and had been demolished in 1883. During the watching brief, a wall of yellow sandstone blocks was observed which may have been constructed to revet a cellar. No dating evidence was found, but it was noted that the wall bore a resemblance to foundation walls excavated in Dudley town centre which had provisionally been dated to the 17th century. A circular well-shaft, a number of connected brick walls and a brick foundation were also recorded. These features seemed to have dated from the 19th century at the earliest. It was concluded that a detailed survey of documentary and cartographic sources could enable the recorded features to be dated more precisely and inserted into their contemporary surrounding townscape.
