Abstract:
An archaeological desk-based assessment was carried out, and revealed that the site lay within an historic landscape formed by and containing features that dated from the Iron Age and medieval period through to the early 20th century, and surviving as surface remains. Much of the present landscape had been influenced by three major factors: the creation of Haveragh Park in the 12th century, the enclosure of land and the construction of Penny Pot Lane turnpike road in the late 18th century and the creation of Beaver Dyke Reservoirs in the 1860s. The study site to the south of John of Gaunt's Castle had been occupied since at least the early 17th century and probably before. The existing structures and features surviving on the surface represented the remains of the 18th century farmstead and later mid-19th century buildings. The discovery of sub-surface archaeology was possible or other such structures, perhaps also relating to John of Gaunt's castle. [Au(adp)]
