Abstract: |
Excavations were carried out in advance of the laying of a new sewerage system at Vale Royal Abbey, within an area designated as a SAM. It was believed that the abbey cloisters had been situated in the area of proposed drainage works. Massive recent disturbance which had probably been associated with the installation of an earlier drainage system was encountered in all of the excavation trenches. A layer of orange sandstone rubble which may have been associated with the post-Dissolution demolition of the abbey buildings or the construction of the present house was also observed. In either case, it may have represented a convemient stratigraphic marker, indicative of the point below which sensitive archaeology existed. Artefacts recovered included medieval building material, relatively early post-medieval domestic pottery and glasswares, and animal bone. [Au(adp)] |
