Abstract: |
The desk-based assessment of the area around Brockett Hall was undertaken prior to proposed redevelopment of the site as a golf course. While the archaeological potential for the site during the early prehistoric periods was uncertain it was felt that the archaeological potential for the later prehistoric and Roman periods could be defined as moderate to good, the potential for the Anglo-Saxon/early medieval periods was defined as low. The site was the known location of several late medieval tenements and a late medieval mansion and deer park which were subsequently rebuilt and remodelled in the 16th century and again in the late 18th century. Historic maps and air photographs suggested that elements of the former garden and park layouts had survived on site and in places would be threatened by the proposed development. The report recommended the following archaeological mitigation measures: a walkover survey, a magnetometer survey and a programme of trial trenching in areas identified by the above surveys.
