Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a residential development identified that several Neolithic flint flakes had been found at a nearby site, and that two Neolithic axes had been found elsewhere within the borough. A Late Iron Age settlement where occupation appeared to have continued into the Roman period had lain 1km to the east of the site, and the routes of two Roman roads were thought to have passed through the area. Settlement in the vicinity had been documented since early medieval times. A manor house had lain to the north-east until 1801, and the foundations of a 15th century building which may have been a forerunner of the house had been noted nearby. The site lay close to an ancient watercourse; a Roman and medieval crossing of the stream was thought to have lain in the vicinity. It was concluded that the site had a low archaeological potential, as truncation was known to have been caused by previous development. It was recommended that proposed geotechnical test-pits and boreholes should be monitored in order to assess archaeological survival. [AIP] |
