Abstract: |
A metal detector survey was undertaken at the proposed site of an extension to a mine spoil disposal facility. Following the earlier submission of a desk-based assessment report to the County Archaeologist, discussions had revealed some confusion about the precise location of previous metal detector finds. The survey was carried out in order to clarify the issue. Ten artefacts were recovered, including several of a modern origin and four of medieval date. The latter consisted of two sherds of pottery, a copper alloy rumbler bell and a silver seal matrix. Other objects included a copper alloy ring which had probably been part of a modern horse harness, and a fragment of iron slag. It was concluded that the survey had confirmed the results of the desk-top assessment, indicating that there was no evidence for the existence of archaeological remains within the site. [AIP] |
