Abstract:
Lower Rollestone was situated close to two important Ancient Monuments, the Stoke Hill Hillfort and the Roman Signal Station. The recovery of prehistoric flints from the Stoke Hill area may have indicated occupation or activity in this area close to the city over a wide period of time, although other than the hillfort no specific sites have been identified. It was suggested that Pennsylvania Road was an 'ancient trackway' , perhaps of Saxon, Roman or prehistoric date, although this hypothesis was not accepted universally. The physical evidence was circumstantial, and limited to occasional Roman artefact recovery along the general route of the road. Within the exception of the cob barn, the farmhouse, and two small lengths of stone wall, all the historic farm buildings depicted on 19th-century maps had been removed prior to or during the early post-war period. Topsoil was removed from an area within the garden of the former farmhouse for a temporary dwelling. This ground work included the excavation of a service trench for a new septic tank. No archaeological features were exposed and no artefacts collected. [Au(adp)]
