Abstract: |
Surface cleaning and shallow excavations were carried out in connection with restoration work at a church tower. The church dated from c. 1400, and was thought to have replaced an earlier building which lay to the north. The tower had been dated to 1421. It was altered in the early 17th century, and the church as a whole was restored extensively during the 19th century. During the excavation, debris and flooring which may have been associated with the 19th century renovation work was revealed. Artefacts included clay pipe and window glass fragments, and sherds of 18th and 19th century pottery. It was concluded that any earlier features which may have existed were unlikely to be disturbed by the present restoration activity. [Au(adp)] |
