Abstract:
An archaeological evaluation was carried out as part of the planning process prior to the redevelopment of the site. Three evaluation trenches were opened, covering a total area of some 60 sq. m. There was no evidence for activity on the site prior to the mid 19th century, and no significant archaeological features or finds were recorded. The central and southern trenches revealed a straightforward and broadly comparable sequence of natural sand/silt deposits overlain by soil horizons. In the southern trench the natural deposits were cut away by a linear features, which was assumed to represent one side of an adjacent and now-culverted stream. The backfill of this feature produced some potsherds of mid to later 19th century date, and it was possible that this feature was infilled at the time of the adjoining railway construction in the late 19th century. The central trench also revealed two smaller cut features which may have represented cultivation pits. The third and most northerly trench was truncated throughout its length by a very large modern feature, up to 3m deep, possibly a pit dug for brickearth extraction. The backfill of this feature produced some pot sherds and metal artefacts of earlier 20th century date. [Au(abr)]
