Abstract: |
The desktop study established that Jacob's Well Road appeared to represent the old course of a stream flowing into the River Avon at Limekiln Dock. This stream, with its many headwaters and springs, was exploited in the 12th or 13th centuries to provide a well researched and documented conduited supply both to St Mark's Hospital and St Augustine's Abbey. The study area was previously occupied by a cottage and garden, and was developed firstly as a School for Girls in the mid 19th century and later into artisan housing turning it into Gorse Lane.
