Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of two new office blocks identified that the surrounding area was very rich in prehistoric archaeology. Two Neolithic settlements had been discovered in the area, both of which had continued in use into the Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age transition period. Two further Bronze Age settlements had lain to the south-west, and Late Bronze Age features had been recorded elsewhere. Roman occupation had also occurred in the area, continuing into the 4th century at one site. From at least the 11th century onwards, the proposal site appeared to have undergone minimal development, if any, the medieval and later evidence suggesting that it had lain within open fields. It was concluded that the site had good potential for the survival of archaeological features and environmental evidence, although it was noted that the greater part of it lay on the floodplain, and that this may have reduced the possibility of earlier settlements having occurred. It was proposed that an evaluation should be undertaken. [AIP] |
