Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken in advance of proposed residential development. A previous desk-based assessment had suggested that the site lay within an area of archaeological potential in the vicinity of a number of known sites. Fourteen trial trenches were excavated, representing a 5% sample of the proposed development area. Evidence of ploughing and dumped deposits of 19th to 20th century date associated with Stoneham House Farm were the only archaeological remains encountered during the evaluation. The absence of any earlier remains, particularly the lack of ridge and furrow, suggested that the site may have previously had a pastoral land-use. [Au(abr)] |
