Abstract:
Prior to the redevelopment of Ford Abbey Farm, and as part of the ongoing archaeological investigations, excavations, an evaluation, and watching briefs were undertaken within the main farm building complex, barn complex and surrounding landscape. The excavations were focused on the central farm buildings with the excavation of the courtyard, the footprint of a building to the north-east (Building C), and an area to its south-west. Building C contained the earliest evidence for occupation from this phase of works in the form of features related to 15th/16th century structures. The excavations also demonstrated the evolution of the structure from timber construction to stone in the late 16th century. Excavations in the courtyard demonstrated three phases of surface, a stone-lined drain drained the later surfaces and there was evidence for a timber structure over part of the courtyard. The evaluation showed that the moat was stone lined over a greater portion of its length than was previously thought, and had some success in determining the route of an associated leat/watercourse. Three of four watching briefs undertaken revealed little of archaeological interest, but the fourth discovered the southern edge of the suspected leat/watercourse. [Au(adp)]
