Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken due. Cropmarks indicated the presence of four possible ditch enclosures and suggested elements of former regimes of land division, which possibly date to the Iron Age and Roman periods (as already found in the Methley area). Nevertheless, there remained the possibility of early prehistoric sites, which were often not enclosed in nature. Such sites invariably avoided detection by remote sensing techniques such as air photography and geophysical survey. The geophysical anomalies generally corresponded with the observed cropmarks. It was possible that there may have been a greater level of archaeological activity in parts of the site than was suggested from either the number of visible cropmarks or the detected magnetic anomalies. The possibility of a Roman road through the northern part of the site was not backed up by the geophysical survey. Documentary evidence, cropmarks and medieval pottery suggest medieval settlements in the vicinity, but they do not appear to have extended into the proposal area. [Au(adp)] |
