Abstract:
An archaeological excavation was undertaken in respect of a planning application for the building of a lavatory and washroom. The excavation was divided into two areas. Trench 1 involved the excavation of the foundation trenches for the new lavatory to be built against the outside of the north aisle of the church. The excavation of these foundation trenches revealed an undated wall forming a substation underground structure, which was most likely to have been for Victorian charnel. The excavation only encroached into a small area of undisturbed graveyard where seven, undated, inter-cutting inhumations were excavated. Trench 2 was located at the north-west corner of the north aisle. Thirteen inter-cutting inhumations were excavated from this trench; no dating evidence was recovered from any of the graves. Four fragments of Roman brick or tile were recovered - the standing fabric of the church contained other pieces of Roman building material, but the source remained unknown. No evidence for Roman occupation was found during the excavations. [Au(abr)]
