Abstract: |
An archaeological excavation and watching brief was undertaken during the refurbishment of the existing building. Removal of the existing floor in the light well revealed a substantial, curving chalk foundation, which was consistent with the location and design of the circular church of the Knights Templars, dating to the 12th century. The foundation curved across the centre of the light well, truncating a series of intercutting Roman features on either side. One of these features had itself truncated a skeleton, aligned E-W, displacing its skull and upper arms. The burial appeared to have been placed in the base of a north-south aligned ditch, which was cutting into natural sand and gravel. A further Roman deposit was recorded in the southern art of the area under investigation. [Au(abr)] |
