Abstract: |
A watching brief was kept on the demolition of an important stretch of the Carshalton House estate wall. Detailed information on the construction and dating of the section was obtained, which allowed a reconsideration of the building date for the whole wall to be made. An earlier survey of the wall had dated it to c.1720 on stylistic grounds. A combination of all dating information now allowed the suggestion that all the walls with pilasters and door openings were the result of the addition or rebuilding of the walls some 60 years after the building of the Water Tower (which had been dated to c.1716-20). It was also possible that these visible parts of the wall were added to earlier foundations, as seen in Carshalton House sections, as these were very fine pieces of work compared to the work of the southern wall, and had archaeologically dated deposits up against them from the early 18th century.
