Abstract: |
An archaeological excavation was carried out. The earliest deposits consisted of the silting up of a ravine at the east end of the site. The upper levels of this ravine had been deliberately backfilled in order for construction to take place. The earliest evidence consisted of a flue made from 2.5 inch bricks. Two chimneys were present on the site, with a flue connecting them and other flues running from them. It was likely that these predated the late 19th century extension to an earlier building fronting onto South Shore Road. This extension covered the majority of the site and all the buildings were associated with Hawk's Iron Works. The structural remains were demolished and backfilled in the mid 20th century.
