Abstract: |
A desk based assessment of the surviving bridge at Dudbridge was undertaken. Proposals had been made to demolish its southern parapet in order to divert electricity cables. The present bridge displayed four distinct phases of construction, the earliest consisting of a slightly hump-backed bridge of Oolitic limestone, likely to have been the triple-arched bridge recorded in 1368. The bridge had later been widened, probably in 1780 and again prior to 1938. Further construction work was carried out in 1990-91. It was recommended that the bridge should be commended to English Heritage for statutory protection, either as a Listed Building or a Scheduled Ancient Monument, and that it should be preserved in situ in its entirety. It was further recommended that, if demolition of the southern parapet were the only available option, no work should impact upon the medieval fabric, and that the 18th century stones should be replaced in their original positions following the cable diversion.
