Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment of the site identified a complete absence of find spots of prehistoric and Roman date in the vicinity. Overall, the archaeological potential for these periods was uncertain but could most probably be defined as low. Throughout the Saxon and medieval periods the study site lay within a large expanse of marshland for summer pasture. With the exception of a chapel for the use of Shepherds (at Chapel House south of the study site), it was thought that there were no permanent settlements or structures anywhere on the Isle of Dogs throughout these periods. The site lay as open land until the second half of the 19th century, with the first development being indicated in the first edition OS map of 1868/74 where the Tank Works and Wire Rope and Galvanising Works on Bying were clearly shown. The second edition OS map of 1893-4 indicated the site was fully developed by this time. The report concluded that on the basis of the available information, in particular the site's low archaeological potential and the low impact of the proposed development, that they would not recommend the implementation of any further archaeological mitigation measures.
