Abstract: |
The assessment was undertaken in response to a condition upon the proposed refurbishment of the building. Research had found that the site was in an area where Roman burials, particularly cremations in urns, were often found and where Roman quarrying took place. In the 12th century the Knights Templars built their first Temple Church in the country on the site immediately to the north and the study site itself would have been the site of the Templars' associated buildings. It was possible that the study site would have also been the location of the medieval Southampton House. If any remains of such features were to be found during groundworks on site they would have merited recording. [Au(adp)] |
