Abstract: |
Further evaluation on the site of Ring's clay tobacco pipe works on Temple Back comprised the excavation of two trenches. These were located to record the two circular features depicted on the 1884 Ordnance Survey 1:500 First Edition, interpreted as kilns for firing the clay tobacco pipes. Whilst the first trench found nothing of archaeological interest, a number of floor surfaces and roughly-guilt wall were located in the second trench. A brick filled feature bounded by a wall probably represented the continuation of a feature identified during an earlier evaluation undertaken during 1994. A metal plate inserted into the floor was recorded, although its function was unclear. Raw pipe clay recorded throughout trench two suggested that the recorded features had been associated with the tobacco pipe works. Brick and cobbled floors were also recorded which may have represented an access way/slipway to the Floating Harbour, whilst some later walls were interpreted as part of a brick lined chamber or cellar.
