Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of a proposed development site identified that fourteen sites of archaeological interest had previously been recorded in the surrounding area. These comprised two prehistoric stone axes, undated burials, an undated earthwork, a railway and associated features, a canal, canal basin and wharf, a milestone, a church, two houses and the Carnforth ironworks. In addition to these sites, a long barrow in the area had been described by an 18th century historian. The proposal site was partly occupied by disused industrial buildings, a quarry, and Carnforth Lodge, a detached house of late 18th/early 19th century origin. Field inspection revealed that much of the site had been quarried away, with a substantial quantity of recent infilling. It was recommended that trial trenching should be undertaken within the front part of the site, the only area which appeared to have survived intact. It was also recommended that a basic survey of Carnforth Lodge should be undertaken prior to its demolition. [Au(abr)] |
