Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during the excavation of geotechnical test-pits at a proposed development site which had until relatively recently formed part of the Erith Marshes. During the construction of a road in the vicinity, important prehistoric remains had been found, including an extensive assemblage of Late Mesolithic flint and a Bronze Age wooden structure. During the watching brief, a broken crested blade of a type datable to the Late Mesolithic or Early Neolithic period was found in an alluvial sand. River sands and gravels had been sealed by alluvial silts, clays and marginal peats. It was concluded that the development proposals would be unlikely to significantly affect archaeological deposits.
