Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during groundworks at a development site. Documentary evidence had suggested that the medieval chantry chapel of St Mary may once have lain within the development area, although its exact location had been lost. During the watching brief, no evidence of previous settlement was observed, and no artefacts pre-dating the 20th century were recovered. It was concluded either that the site had been little used for settlement from the prehistoric to the medieval period, or that the erection and subsequent demolition, in the 1960s, of pre-fabricated buildings associated with a hospital complex had completely obliterated any evidence of past land-use and habitation.
