Abstract: |
An archaeological appraisal was undertaken prior to the proposed re-ordering of St Helens Church. The church was probably Abingdons oldest church, predating the abbey and possibly marking the primary focus of Saxon Abingdon. Recent archaeological discoveries in Abingdon had brought to prominence the prehistoric and Roman phase of settlement and identified a defensive circuit within which the church stood. The growth of the church southwards towards the river was unusual but determined by its location. The site of the church had archaeological potential for Roman and earlier remains, traces of the Saxon 'minster' church, and evidence for the successive phases of building. Deposit survival within the church was unknown, and the impact of the new flooring uncertain without careful monitoring of the works, with archaeological intervention where necessary. [Au] |
