Abstract:
Desk-based assessment of a proposed development site which lay within an Archaeological Priority Zone identified that artefacts dating from the prehistoric period onwards had been found in the surrounding area, and that a Roman road had passed nearby, on the alignment of High Holborn/Oxford Street. A dispersed Roman cemetery had lain to the north and south of the road. Throughout the subsequent Saxon period, the Roman road appeared to have continued in use. The 7th-9th century settlement of Lundenwic had developed just to the south, but did not appear to have extended as far north as the proposal site, as no evidence of Saxon occupation had been found during an evaluation of an adjoining site to the east. The nearest evidence for occupation had been found c. 35m to the south, where domestic rubbish had been dumped, and c. 150m south, where Saxon pits and structures had been revealed. The area to the rear of the main High Holborn frontage had largely been open land, probably used for agriculture, in the medieval period. Cartographic evidence indicated that it had been repeatedly built on since the middle of the 17th century. However, the extent of the remains and the possible infilled cellars associated with these structures was not known. Potential survival of made ground sequences was thought to be generally good, as there appeared to be no modern basements to the rear of the Town Hall. However, no evidence of Roman burials or Saxon land use had been found at the adjacent site because of subsequent damage, probably from medieval/post-medieval agriculture. It was concluded that an archaeological evaluation of the proposal site might be appropriate. [Au(abr)]
