Abstract:
A desktop assessment of the likely archaeological potential of a site at Brentry Hospital was undertaken. Prehistoric activity had previously been recorded in the Brentry area although none specifically in the immediate vicinty of the study area. Both Henbury and Westbury were settled by the middle of the Saxon period, with churches established before AD 720. The boundary between the parishes ran along the ridge, but in the area close to the site diverted to one side. Brentry was an important place by the time of Domesday, giving its name to the Hundred. The original road leading to Charlton from the main route to the Passages ran along what is now the north-western edge of the site, the road having been diverted shortly after the construction of Brentry House. This diversion cut off portions of two fields from the present site, one of which exhibits signs of ridge and furrow cultivation. A small building at the side of the old road, possibly agricultural in use, was extended during the 19th and 20th centuries, to form the present group of structures. At the end of the 19th century the Brentry House estate was converted into a centre for alcohol treatment, and subsequently it bcame a mental hospital. [Au(adp)]
