Abstract:
A desk-based study to assess the archaeological implications of development on the site of Telephone House showed that the proposed site was of considerable archaeological interest. Features of interest included the Marsh Wall probably running along the rear wall of the Old Duke and through the centre of the adjacent building (although any remains of this may have been destroyed by modern development); the southern part of the Welsh Back burial-ground on the Crow Lane frontage of Telephone House; and the possible survival of elements of The Custom House and many of the other medieval and post-medieval tenements occupying the site which survived intact into the 19th century. Further archaeological evaluation was recommended. [AIP]
