Abstract:
A desk-based assessment was undertaken due to a proposed residential development. Archaeological evidence dating from the late Saxon to modern periods had been identified and the medieval church of St. Mary contained a Scheduled churchyard. Saxo-Norman to post-medieval pottery had previously been recovered from the route of the proposed development. Cartographic sources indicated that the present field boundaries were in existence by 1800, but cropmarks to the west showed traces of possible earlier field systems. Pinfold Lane, which crossed the site, suggested a pound for stray animals had been present in the vicinity. A walkover survey was carried out at the site to assess ground conditions and the presence of archaeological remains. Fairly dense scatters of medieval and post-medieval pottery were recovered from fields in the northeastern corner of the site, supporting the earlier framework. A background scatter of pottery was also collected from across the rest of the site, probably representing manuring activity. The majority of the site would have been suitable for further investigations in the form of the geophysical or fieldwalking surveys. [Au(abr)]
