Abstract: |
Archaeological and historical data from or near the river valley ranged in date from the Palaeolithic (500,000 - 10,000 BC) up to the 20th century. There were five main activities in the area: settlement, river industries, farming practices, communications and water management and recreation. The analysis showed how these areas of activity developed and interrelated, with increasing competition for the river's water in the post-medieval and modern periods. The riverside and valley floor locations created the potential for a range of archaeological features to have been preserved, including the survival of organic materials. [Au(abr)] |
