Abstract:
A watching brief was carried out during an excavation to deepen a lift pit within King William Block at the Royal Naval College. This block was a Grade I Listed Building, whilst the College in its entirety was a SAM. The remains of an important Tudor palace lay approximately 170m to the north of the lift pit excavation; associated structures would have radiated out from the palace. During the watching brief, brick stepped foundations associated with the standing building were observed in both the southern and northern trench sections. The eastern and western sections revealed no foundations to the walls of the lift pit; these walls appeared to have relied on the structural strength and stability of two stepped foundations for support. It appeared that a large initial foundation had been laid to act as a plinth, possibly within a cut feature. Subsequently a free-standing stepped foundation had been constructed in brick. This had then been backfilled with sub-soil taken from elsewhere in the vicinity to create a working surface for the new building. Several fragments of glassware, oyster shell, animal bone, brick and tile were recovered from this level of redeposited material. [Au(adp)]
