Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out at a proposed development site which lay close to the centre of the medieval village of Bawdrip, and c. 1km from the site of a Romano-British settlement. A robbed foundation trench for a wall was revealed, and deposits were recorded in the garden area which suggested that the earliest phase of settlement had occurred in the 12th-13th century. In the orchard area to the west of Grange Cottage, occupation deposits and features of the 10th-11th century to the 13th-14th century were revealed. Features included boundary or drainage ditches, a gully and possible beam slots for wooden buildings. A gully which may have been of early post-medieval date was noted. Medieval and 16th-17th century pottery was recovered. [Au(adp)] |
