Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken following the granting of planning permission for the erection of a 9 storey office block, 10 storey hotel and 28 storey apartment tower together with provision for underground car parking and associated site works. There were no SAMs on the site or in the immediate vicinity. There was a Grade II Listed Building, 91/93 Old Hall Street, on the site. This would be incorporated into the proposed development under Listed Building Consent. There was no evidence for earlier prehistoric occupation or land-use within or adjacent to the site and therefore a nil potential for finds dating to this period. There was no evidence for Iron Age and Romano-British, Saxon or early medieval occupation within or immediately adjacent to the study site and therefore a nil potential for finds dating to these periods. There was no evidence for medieval settlement within or immediately adjacent to the study site, which lay in arable land outside the town and therefore a nil potential for finds relating to medieval occupation was identified. The site was instrumental to the commercial expansion of Liverpool in the post-medieval period. Later changes in land use had obliterated the former canal infrastructure. A Listed Building remained, and would continue to remain, on site. Fragmentary remains of the former canal basin may have been extant under parts of the site. Therefore a moderate to high potential for the identification of the infrastructure relating to the former canal basin was identified. A nil to low potential for recovery of traces of post-medieval industrial or commercial infrastructure beside the canal basin was identified. [Au(adp)] |
