Abstract: |
Charlecote Park was built in the mid 16th century and had since undergone a number of phases of alteration. The main phases of alteration were in the early 18th century, the mid 18th century and the mid 19th century. Archaeological observation at the north wind of Charlecote Park during renovation work, revealed elements of original 16th century building work including timber framing on the second floor and parts of early doorways behind panelling in the main staircase on the ground floor and first floor after removal of 19th century stud walls and temporary removal of 18th century panelling. The removal of the spiral staircase in the north-east turret revealed the make-up of the plaster and areas of internal brickwork and segmental brick reviving arches above the doorways. The latter probably related to renovation of the doorways in the mid 19th century. [Au(abr)] |
