Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of a proposed development site identified that a Roman tessellated pavement had been found in the immediate vicinity, and that two bridges to the west of the site had been recorded in the 17th century, athough they were of earlier origin. Further remains recorded within 300m of the site included an electricity generating station dating from c. 1903, and Late Saxon and medieval remains, such as a medieval building, a 12th century hospital and a 13th-14th century quarry pit. It was concluded that further archaeological investigation of the site would be likely to locate a sequence of late Saxon and medieval deposits, possibly preceded by evidence for a substantial Roman structure. Deposits along the western, northern and southernmost limits of the site were likely to have been disturbed by post-medieval development. [AIP] |
