Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out at the proposed site of a residential development, which lay within an Archaeological Priority Area and within an area designated in the Register of Historic Battlefields. The site lay close to the site of the Battle of Barnet, and it was believed that the Lancastrian forces had been drawn up for battle across it. It had also been suggested htat the site lay on an important early boundary, and that a medieval mill had lain within it. During the evaluation, a brick-lined drain containing 19th-20th century pottery and floor tile and a large ditch were revealed. The ditch had been finally infilled in the post-medieval period, and was likely to have been the boundary to the medieval royal hunting estate of Enfield Chase. Artefacts found included pottery dating from the 16th to the 19th centuries, pieces of clay pipe, a complete hand-made post-medieval brick and fragments of tile. [AIP] |
