Abstract:
The assessment identified two main areas of archaeological interest. Boringdon House, which was situated outside the eastern edge of the study area, had medieval origins but largely dated from the 16th century. Between the house and Plymbridge Road, which bisected the study area, 17th century maps recorded a park. The southern and eastern boundaries of the the park, which consisted of substantial drystone wall, lay within the study area. The origins of the park were unclear but it could have served as a deer park and may even have had medieval origins. To the east of Plymbridge Road was a late 17th century Triumphal Arch. This was built to be seen from Saltram to the south and was not visible from Boringdon House itself. It was noted that any development work, in this case the creation of a golf course, would have to take into account the historical boundaries of the park and the Triumphal Arch and its setting. [AIP]
