Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment on behalf of Tesco Stores Ltd showed that no archaeological information was forthcoming from the site, but that it lay within an area of Iron Age and Romano-British settlement and agricultural activity. The site was located within the presumed core of the medieval settlement of Bishop's Cleeve, on the route between the manor of the Bishops of Worcester and the parish church. The latter monument was posited as the location of a monastic establishment known to exist in the 8th century and a settlement may have developed around it. A building on the site, 20 Church Road, of mid-17th century date, was Listed Grade II. [Au] |
