Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of a proposed extension to a landfill site identified that it contained no previously-recorded archaeological remains. However, a cropmark enclosure had been recognised just to the north, and a number of often poorly provenanced prehistoric and Romano-British finds had been made in the vicinity. Examination of aerial photographic evidence indicated that four enclosures of differing size and type lay within the central part of the site. The morphology of these features sugested that they may have been of prehistoric and/or Romano-British date. Changes in late medieval/post-medieval field boundaries and ponds, particularly in the middle section of the site, had been documented by aerial photographic and cartogaphic evidence. The remains of a Second World War Fleet Air Arm military base, of undetermined function, lay within the western part of the proposal area, whilst the line of a dismantled railway, which had run to the Royal Ordnance Factory at Birchwood, Risley, passed through the site.
