Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was conducted, of two parcels of land, following the demolition of blocks of flats and prior to redevelopment. Previous excavations on part of the site had revealed archaeological features and deposits, suggesting the potential for survival elsewhere within the site. Construction trenches and foundations of 1880s terraced houses were recorded. A complex and well-preserved sequence of archaeological features and deposits with associated artefacts was also revealed. They were dated to the late 1st to early 2nd century AD, with some 3rd century activity, and were thought to represent further parts of the Roman 'vicus' first examined in the 1960s. [Au(abr)] |
