Abstract: |
The assessment was undertaken of the site prior to the proposed construction of two new six-storey buildings on the site. Originally part of the separate township of Redcliffe, it had been a densely occupied urban area from the medieval period and may have had Saxon antecedents. The site was within that part of Redcliffe that was enclosed within the city defensive wall in the early 13th century. The site stood on the eastern (inland) side of the street where the significant archaeological sequence was likely to have consisted of dense medieval and later urban development: successive buildings and plots evolving around the medieval yards and lanes which focussed on Redcliff Street, Thomas Lane and the adjacent church.
