Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken in connection with the development of the farmyard and adjoining land for residential purposes, with a combination of conversion and new building. An earlier evaluation had identified part of a water channel, which was probably the artificial watercourse shown on early maps. Within the garden a robber trench was located which may have marked the line of the original east wall of the orchard. The absence of dateable finds, particularly of medieval material, was worthy of note and suggested that the present farm buildings were the first structures built on the site. During the watching brief, further evidence for the water channels and robber trench was recorded, along with a wall footing which was almost certainly contemporary with the standing buildings.
