Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken, which comprised the observation of the 0.6m wide pipe trench after it had been mechanically excavated and the recording of any archaeological features seen in section. A number of undated pits and cobbled surfaces were recorded. These surfaces were tentatively interpreted as earlier road surfaces. In addition there was a depression in the surface of the natural at the western end of the pipe trench. Although it was not possible to determine if this feature was archaeological in origin, it may have formed a hollow way. Alternatively, given its location to the southeast of the outer bailey of the Norman Castle it may have represented a feature associated with that monument. [Au(abr)] |
