Abstract: |
A service trench, which had been partially dug without archaeological supervision in the basement of the White Tower at the Tower of London, exposed a large masonry feature. Excavation of the feature was continued by archaeological contractors, and further works were monitored. The masonry consisted of roughly broken stones set in a generous amount of mortar, and represented a foundation block. It was concluded that the feature could have been of Roman or medieval date. A small number of artefacts were recovered during the excavation, including a sherd of Roman pottery, fragments of oyster shell, charcoal and ceramic building materials, and a flint flake. [AIP] |
