Abstract:
An evaluation and watching brief was undertaken prior and during redevelopment, which consisted of a series of evaluation trenches and the monitoring of engineers excavations followed by a watching brief. Earlier works had identified chalk structures; the chalk-lined structure by the Royal Oak Public House was backfilled in the early/mid-18th century and contained pottery, glass vessel, clay pipe bowls and animal bones, possibly from a clearance of the Public House. The second chalk structure was also a cesspit, again filled in the 18th century, but contained a small selection of domestic pottery. The chalk well had been backfilled in the late 19th century, possibly when the area was redeveloped in the 1890's. From the distribution of these features it may be possible to draw rough boundaries for the properties on Surrey Street during the 18th century. The construction of the department store at the beginning of he 20th century had removed all other archaeological deposits and features. Service trenches had caused further truncation. [Au(abr)]
